Suffolk Ambassador Contest
Pre-enter by June 7, 2010
USSA awards up to $1,000 in travel expenses
Looking for a great way to take your involvement with the Suffolk sheep to an additional level? How about being the Suffolk Ambassador!
Continuing the tradition of great Junior Suffolk members, the Suffolk Ambassador Contest and program is a unique way to help promote and stay highly involved with the Suffolk sheep (and all the people who raise them!), and to hone useful skills that will serve you well, whatever your future has in store.
During your one-year term as Ambassador you will have the chance to represent the UJSSA/USSA at sheep and lamb related activities, and to interact with the people and institutions that impact all phases of the sheep industry. You'll have help from the UJSSA adult coordinator and the USSA youth committee as you make your decisions about where and what to do during your time in office.
Who can be the Suffolk Ambassador?
Ideally, the Suffolk Ambassador will come from the ranks of the Board members of the UJSSA, (past and present) and must be a current member of the USSA or UJSSA, who is actively engaged in the production and registration of purebred Suffolk sheep, OR be the child of a parent, grandparent or guardian who is actively engaged in the production and registration of purebred Suffolks. The candidate must be 15 years of age prior to January 1 of the year in which they are to compete in the contest, but shall not have reached 22 years of age prior to that time.
What's the USSA role?
The USSA will pay costs associated with the travel, transportation, lodging and meal expenses incurred by the current Ambassador, within limits for such expenses as set by the UJSSA/USSA, for activities in which the Suffolk Ambassador is scheduled to participate at the request of the UJSSA/USSA. Prior approval and consultation with the Junior Coordinator is required! A maximum of $1000 is issued; the Ambassador will not receive additional funding for serving as a Junior Board Member. The UJSSA will provide information on times and places of events, suggested attire and other information.
Duties:
For one year from the date of installation at the UJSSA National Junior Show the Suffolk Ambassador will be an EX-officio member of the UJSSA Board of Directors. In consultation with the UJSSA Coordinator, he/she will attend such events such as (but not limited to) market lamb shows, county, state and national shows, consumer-related lamb/wool events, parades, industry forums, educational events, etc., to actively promote Suffolks. He/She will report quarterly to the UJSSA Board on all activities, and also report to the USSA at least annually.
How do I get to be Suffolk Ambassador?
You must apply and compete! It's a two-step process:
1. You may either be sponsored by your state or area organization, or you may submit your own application. The entry should include a candidate information sheet, available from the office, a 3X5 candidate photo, and any supporting materials; scrapbook, 4-H or FFA Proficiency Records, news clips, other photos, etc. It is a contest, so make it good.
2. A personal interview at the UJSSA National Junior Show. This interview will be conducted during the National Junior Show using the following guidelines:
Knowledge of Suffolk sheep-25 points: Knowledge of facts about the Suffolk breed, general knowledge of the sheep industry and industry-based activities.
Personality-25 points: Imagination/creativeness, social skills/self-confidence and etiquette/manners.
Overall Impression-25 points: Conversational skills, attitude/interest in industry, and appearance, grooming and neatness.
Scrapbook-25 points: Organization, proof of activities and knowledge.
The New Suffolk Ambassador will be introduced at the National Junior Show.
Yes there is a Deadline!
Your original entry from your sponsoring state or area organization must be postmarked on or before June 7, 2009. Your supporting materials may be sent ahead, or be brought with you to the interview. Send materials to: USSA, P.O. Box 256, Newton, UT 84327.
